Birgu is one of the oldest city on the Island, and it played an important role in the Siege of Malta in 1565. Birgu was once a main city and has a long history of military and maritime activities. Therefore, the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans Byzantines, Arabs, Normans and the Arakanese all shaped and developed Birgu.
St. Johns Co-Cathedral located in Valletta of Malta was built by the Knights of Malta between 1573 and 1578, having been commissioned in 1572 by Grand Master Jean de la Cassière as the conventual church of the Order of the Knights Hospitaller of St John.
The Dome of Mosta’s Parish Church is said to be the 4th largest church dome in Europe. Built from 1833-1871 on the site of a previous church, it was designed by ‘Giorgio Grognet’,whose plans were closely based on the Pantheon in Rome.
